Statement
Bright color is the first thing we intuitively respond to when we are in the midst of dark moments. When the world feels black and white, a pure hue can reconnect us with a buried emotion and usher us towards a clearer understanding of the subconscious forces that affect us.
I use these bright, pure colors, often straight from the tube, to create emotional paintings that celebrate the life in every little thing. Each composition is embedded with the qualities of artists who came before me and whose works I resonate with deeply. Modern masters like Hilma af Klint, Alma Thomas and Lee Krasner as well as ancient carvings and medieval compositions - their color palettes and flattened forms inform the way I’ve come to understand beauty. When I paint, these references subconsciously seep through, combining in hybrid ways that create a newness all my own.
My paintings are a departure from and expansion of my previous work as a poet. People write poems to bring forth something from the soul that touches someone else in the same way. Through them, I hope to be seen for who I am and for my viewers to likewise feel seen through my work.
